Kuching is
the capital city of Sarawak. It has a population of about 300,000 people. Kuching
is home to a variety of ethnicities from Chinese to Bidayuh, Melanau, Malay and
Orang Ulu (aborigines). This make interracial marriages common in Kuching. Many
languages are used and there are places of worship for all religions. As the
capital city, Kuching is largely an industrial and commercial city.
Tourism
Kuching
means ‘cat’ in Malay. The city is proud of its namesake and there are many cat
statues to see in Kuching. Besides the cats, tourist destinations include the
Sarawak State Museum, Cat Museum, Textile Museum and the Astana which is a former
palace.
Outdoor
activities outside Kuching are extremely popular. Tourists enjoy visiting the
Bako National Park, Kuching Wetlands National Park and the Semenggoh Wildlife
Centre which operates an orangutan rehabilitation centre.
